What Is Fasting?

Fasting, in simple terms, involves abstaining from or limiting food intake for a set period of time. Spiritually, fasting is about more than physical discipline; it’s about building a deeper connection with the Almighty  God and the Lord Jesus. While some people associate fasting with dieting or weight loss, the purpose of spiritual fasting is not about shedding pounds. It’s about gaining a richer, more insightful spiritual life.

What Does the Bible say about Fasting?

One of the most powerful examples of fasting comes from the life of the Lord Jesus. In Mark 1:13 (KJV), it says, “And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.” This passage reveals that during his time in the wilderness, the Lord Jesus was ministered to by angels,the Almighty God’s word was pouring into him, nourishing him spiritually in preparation for his ministry. Matthew 4:2 further states, “And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry.” These scriptures highlight the deep spiritual sustenance that the Lord  Jesus received during his fast. His experience reminds us of the truth in Deuteronomy 8:3: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Fasting is a time of spiritual nourishment that goes beyond physical sustenance.

Why Fasting is Important

Fasting is one of the purest ways to draw near to God.   2. Dry Fast (Esther Fast): This fast requires complete abstinence from food and water for three days. Reading the book of Esther provides powerful insights into the significance of this fast.
  3. Daniel Fast: A more flexible fast, the Daniel Fast allows fruits, vegetables, and whole foods while eliminating meat, dairy, sugar, preservatives, and processed foods.
