When Life Breaks You, but You’re Still Trying to Believe in the Almighty God

There comes a point in life when you have to stop asking, “Lord, why me?” and instead say, “Lord, why not me?”
One of my favorite stories in the Bible comes from the Old Testament, when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. This story resonates with me deeply for two reasons.
When the Almighty God led Israel out of Egypt, He didn’t take them on the shortest, most familiar path. Instead, He took them the long way. Exodus 13:17-18 (KJV) says:
“And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea…”
I love this because it shows that sometimes, when the Almighty God is calling us to step out on faith, He won’t take us on the easy, familiar route. He knows us better than we know ourselves—He knew if Israel saw a battle too soon, they might run back to what was familiar, even if it was toxic. And isn’t that how we are sometimes? When faced with the unknown, we tend to retreat to what we’ve always known, even when it’s painful, dysfunctional, or unhealthy. But God, in His wisdom, removes those shortcuts and forces us to trust Him.
Even though Moses was following God’s instructions, the journey was still full of challenges. Just because you’re walking with God doesn’t mean life will be easy. When the Israelites reached the Red Sea, they panicked. They looked back and saw Pharaoh’s army chasing after them, and fear consumed them. But while they were panicking, God was already working.
Exodus 14:21-22 (KJV) says:
“And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.”
Did you catch that? All that night, God was moving on their behalf. While they were filled with fear, doubting and crying out, God was already making a way. And here’s the part that gives me chills, when Pharaoh and his army tried to follow them, the same waters that parted for Israel closed in on their enemies.
This is a reminder that God is not only making a way for you, but He is also cutting off the things that were chasing you. The past that tried to pull you back? The enemies that tried to destroy you? The strongholds that tried to keep you bound. When the Almighty God delivers you, He makes sure they can’t follow you into your next season.
So when life breaks you and you’re struggling to hold onto faith, remember what God has already done. Remember the grace and mercy He has already shown you. If He parted the sea for Israel, He can move mountains for you. If He cut off their enemies, He can silence yours.
Your storm may seem overwhelming, but trust this, the Almighty God is working all night on your behalf. Even when you can’t see it, even when you don’t feel it, He is making a way.
